The Kabasara Good Samaritan Health Centre was founded in 2002 by the Kibbuse Foundation. It is located in the Kabaale district, in a remote area where people are in desperate need of medical health care. The next closest Health Care Centre is approximately 18 km away. The Kabasara Clinic serves over 18,000 people who would otherwise have no access to health care due to lack of transportation. Some patients walk 3 to 4 miles each way for services. The Clinic started out by offering preventative services such as immunizations and antenatal care. The Clinic was at that time housed under a tree. In 2006 land was donated, and with community support and labor, the current two room building was built. At that time the clinic was able to offer other services such as treatment for malaria, respiratory infections and other conditions. The current building is no longer sufficient to house both the clinic and the family of the Nursing Assistant Monice Aheebwa.
The Good Samaritan Clinic does not turn anyone who is unable to pay away, and this often results in a shortage of medicines as basic as penicillin Friends of Kibbuse often makes up these deficits, but by building a new clinic with the capabilities to offer more services it is the goal for the Clinic to be completely self sufficient.
Monica Aheebwa
Monica is the Nursing Assistant for the Kabasara Good Samaritan Clinic. She lives at the clinic with her husband (who is also the groundskeeper) and her 4 children. The family lives in one side of the building and the clinic is on the other side. Monica has been at the Clinic since 2003. People come from as far as 3 or 4 miles to receive health care, sometimes walking, sometimes by motorcycle. Monica sees 10 to 15 patients a day, and her practice and family have outgrown the current facility.
As you can see the clinic is in desperate need of a new building and updated facilities. We are in the process of making that possible. We are collecting funds and making plans so that the building can be rebuilt, proper facilities can be put in place, and a space for additional medical personal can be created.
